Variation in Luminescence Characteristics and Paramagnetic Defect Centres in Fine-Grained Quartz From a Loess-Palaeosol Sequence in Tajikistan: Implications for Provenance Studies in Aeolian Environments

Trapped charge characteristics in quartz are of increasing interest for their utility as indicators sediment provenance. These include sensitivity optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) signal paramagnetic E 1 ’ defect centre quartz. Up until now, these methods have largely been used independently provenance investigations, especially aeolian systems. Variations OSL TL loess-palaeosol sequences has linked to shifts source corresponding climatic fluctuations. However, the processes responsible observed variation quartz, including its link original rock and/or sedimentary history, remains a topic contention. On other hand, intensity is known reflect also routinely utilised indicator studies. In this study we aim understand variations (and TL) by direct comparison fine-grained from c. 60 m-thick sequence Tajikistan. doing so, investigate natural that may led variability trapped-charge over 500 ky timespan covered sequence. Our results suggest apart inherent signature, influenced depositional post-depositional during soil formation.
